Steven Johnsons syndrome is an immune complex hypersensitivity disorder known to be caused by certain
- Antibiotics like cotrimoxazole and penicillin
- Viral infections, and bacterial infections like AIDS, and herpes
- Radiation theraphy for malignancies
- Antiretroviral therapy-Combivir & Nevirapine (NVP)
It is commonly found in young adults and children. Affected individuals usually present with flu-like manifestations like headache, fever, cough, and body aches. There is severe blistering of the skin and mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, nose, vagina, urinary, respiratory, and digestive tracts. It takes around several weeks before recovery sets in.
